Enbridge is Canada’s largest transporter of crude oil, with approximately 24,738 kilometres (15,372 miles) of crude pipeline, delivering on average more than 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil and liquids.
- We export 65 per cent of Western Canadian oil, which represents 13 per cent of the U.S.’s daily crude oil imports.
- On any single day, Enbridge is the largest single conduit of oil into the U.S. We move close to 100 separate commodities, including more than 100 types of refined products.
Enbridge’s pipeline systems are located in strategically important geographical areas, giving us an unparalleled ability to expand and extend our energy delivery networks throughout North America. We are the leading pipeline operator in both Canada’s oil sands region (the second-largest resource play in the world, with an estimated 170 billion barrels of proven recoverable reserves) and the rapidly growing Bakken formation in Canada and the United States. We are currently expanding our pipeline capacity in both regions.
We are currently engaged in the largest capital program in our 65-year history — with $36-billion in commercially secured growth investments across all our business segments, as of March 2014. All of these projects are planned to be in service by 2016, and will expand our North American pipeline and terminal network, primarily to support broadening access of oil sands production to U.S. refining markets.
The $6.2-billion Light Oil Market Access initiative represents a suite of projects in Canada and the U.S. to expand access to markets for growing volumes of North Dakota and Western Canadian light oil production to premium refinery markets in Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. Midwest. Individual projects within the initiative are targeted to be available for service at varying dates between 2014 and early 2016.
The $2.7-billion Eastern Access suite of projects establishes a path for Western Canadian and Bakken crude oil to access refineries in Eastern Canada and the midwest and eastern U.S. For example, by reversing the flow of our existing Line 9, Ontario and Quebec refineries will have access to lower-cost Western Canadian feedstock (Ontario and Quebec currently derive 18 and 90 per cent of their crude, respectively, from higher-priced offshire sources, respectively). In-service dates for Eastern Access projects range from 2013 to 2014.
Meanwhile, the $6.4-billion Western Gulf Coast Access initiative will connect Canadian heavy oil supply to the vast refinery complex along the western Gulf Coast near Houston. Major components of this initiative include the Seaway Pipeline reversal and expansion, and the Flanagan South Pipeline; in-service dates range throughout 2014.

Enbridge transports natural gas all over North America:
- Our Western Canada operations include interest in Vector and Alliance pipelines. The Alliance System transports natural gas from the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin to the U.S. Midwest. Connecting with the Alliance System at Chicago, the Vector Pipeline provides natural gas supplies for local distribution and end-user customers in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ontario.
- In Texas, through Enbridge Energy Partners, a large natural gas gatherer and processor, we connect three of the top four areas for natural gas development in the U.S. Enbridge Energy Partners transports about 15 per cent of Texas natural gas production.

In the Gulf of Mexico, we operate Enbridge Offshore Pipelines, through which we transport approximately 50 per cent of offshore deepwater natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico, a prolific natural gas region. Enbridge Offshore Pipelines has interests in 13 transmission and gathering pipelines in five major pipeline corridors in Louisiana and Mississippi offshore waters. These pipelines include almost 2,400 kilometres (1,500 miles) of underwater pipe and offshore facilities and transport approximately 2.3 billion cubic feet per day.
